Liberal Democrats believe that regardless of income, employment, class, or circumstance, everyone has a right to a safe, affordable home, which is why we oppose the Conservative’s “Right to Buy” scheme.
There is not enough housing to go round in he UK, and that means we need to build over a quarter of a million new houses every year.
All the Conservative proposals do is deprive communities of vital social housing.
Tories have form, thousands of former council houses now let by private landlords. Worse still taxpayers subsidise rent to private landlords through the housing benefits system for people who are working full time.
The Conservatives are privatising Housing Association properties they do not own to meet the demand for more owner occupied housing.
The Autumn Statement pays lip-service to making housing available to all. For most families here in Gorton a £250,000 mortgage is not affordable.
Priortising properties for those who can already afford to take out mortgages and put down big deposits does not help make housing available to all. Nor does reducing the obligations on property developers to provide an adequate level affordable housing in new developments.
Tim Farron, has made clear that secure, affordable housing continues to be a core commitment for the Liberal Democrats.
There are 1.6 million people on housing waiting lists right now, and homes needing a £50k annual salary are not “affordable” and won’t make that list any shorter!
We need this government to take affordable housing seriously.
Manchester City Council needs to take affordable housing seriously.
Homelessness is not a crime, it is a disgrace on our society. Manchester’s Labour bosses have criminalised people for being unable to afford a home.
As a Liberal Democrat, I am appalled by the complacency of this government in the face of a housing crisis that is putting a secure and suitable home out of reach of so many men and women in our country.
If you agree, and would like to stand with the Liberal Democrats as we keep up the fight for better housing for all, join us!
